Welcome to the home of KU’s Know the Code campaign.  This campaign is designed to educate the KU community on the policies, rights, and responsibilities that apply to all Jayhawks.  Knowing the Code can help any student navigate their Jayhawk experience with confidence and ensure success and safety.

What’s the process behind the Code?
  • The Code of Student Rights and Responsibilities was originally adopted by the Student Senate, approved by the Chancellor in 1970, and revised in 1986 and biannually thereafter (most recently in 2018) for the University of Kansas, Lawrence campus. The Code is subject to amendment by the Student Senate with the approval of the Chancellor. Any activity, policy, rule or regulation for the implementation of this code is subject to the approval of the Chancellor and the Board of Regents as provided by law and the University Senate Code.
To whom does the Code apply?
  • All students and registered student organizations of the University of Kansas.
  • The term “student” includes all persons enrolled at the University including individuals who confirm their intent to enroll in programs, those attending orientation sessions, and those that were enrolled at the date of an alleged incident. Persons who withdraw after allegedly violating the student code or who are not officially enrolled for a particular term but who have a continuing relationship with the university are considered “students.”
What happens when the Code is violated?
  • Reports of potential violations of the Code begin the Non-Academic Misconduct Process. For more information about this process, please go to the "Conduct Procedures" section of our website.
What are the most typical Code violations at KU?
  • The large majority of Code violation reports involve violations of the Alcohol & Drug Policy followed closely by possession of fake identification cards.
  • You can find a summary of all Code violations here: http://studentconduct.ku.edu/violations-summary
